A Statement on the Recent Youth Suicides + Helpful Resources

We are deeply saddened by the three recent suicides reported in the US, including two high school students in Parkland. Our thoughts and hearts are with the families, friends, classmates, educators and everyone who has been touched by these tragedies during this very difficult time.

When events like this are widely covered in the news, it’s normal to have an emotional reaction, even if you did not know the people involved personally. Suicide can bring up feelings of confusion, guilt, and hopelessness among many others, and it can be especially painful to hear about people who are so young dying by suicide.

Support and resources are available and can make all the difference, but the help doesn’t stop there. It’s so important to check in with someone you’re worried about – it can really help. Suicide is never the answer.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please don’t hesitate to reach out for help. For 24/7, free, confidential support, contact Crisis Text Line by texting 741741 or The Lifeline by calling 800-273-8255, and visit the Mental Health Resource Center for more information and resources.

How these stories are reported can also have an impact on how those who might be struggling view suicide. We urge the media to do their part to reduce the risk of suicide contagion by reporting on these difficult and complicated issues responsibly, using safe and effective messaging guidelines: suicidepreventionmessaging.org.

We can all do more to take better care of ourselves and one another, and together, we can help prevent suicide.
