Student Mental Health and the Law – A Decade Later: Part 1

Over a decade ago, The Jed Foundation (JED) published “Student Mental Health and the Law,” which discusses the legal issues that colleges and universities face while addressing campus mental health and working with students in distress. In this two-part webinar series, JED will be joined by Peter Lake, JD (professor of law, Charles A. Dana chair and director of the Center for Excellence in Higher Education Law and Policy at Stetson University College of Law, and Senior Higher Education Consulting Attorney with Steptoe & Johnson LLP), who will help overview the landscape of mental health law in higher education. In Part 1, Peter Lake and Victor Schwartz, MD (Chief Medical Officer at The Jed Foundation), will present on various topics including (a) privacy and confidentiality (including FERPA and medical records privacy), (b) disability law, (c) legal principles of delivering mental health services on campus, and (d) the potential liability of colleges and universities for student suicide and violence. Presenters will also discuss how JED’s recommendations have shaped today’s mental health law, as well as future legislation that might impact campus mental health.
