Give Through Your Donor-Advised Fund

Recommending a grant from your donor-advised fund (DAF) can immediately impact the lives of young people across the country, ensuring they have access to life-saving resources and education.

What is a DAF?

DAF accounts provide several ways for you to donate:

  • One time gift – recommend a grant from your DAF to JED
  • Monthly or quarterly grant – set up a recurring grant from your DAF to JED
  • Name JED as the beneficiary of your DAF
  • DAF grants may also be eligible for a matching gift from your employer

DAF accounts are held at financial institutions or community foundations. These agencies invest the money held in DAF accounts, so the value grows (tax-free). Examples include:

  • Commercial OrganizationsFidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable
  • National OrganizationsNational Philanthropic Trust, American Endowment Foundation
  • Community Foundations – Local, religious-based, etc.

Benefits of a DAF:

  • Easy to establish and use
  • Low or no minimum dollar amount required to begin
  • You control when you want to grant funds to a nonprofit
  • Contributions to your DAF are tax deductible and earnings are tax exempt
  • Liquidate non-cash assets into your DAF (ex: stock, life insurance, fine art, real estate), depending on your DAF holding agency’s policies

Make a grant with a DAF:

Step 1

Seek advice from your financial or legal adviser to determine if a DAF is right for you and understand the relevant guidelines for tax benefits. They can advise you on what DAF holding agency may align with your goals or help you open a DAF account.

Step 2

Once your DAF is funded and you are ready to make a grant, contact your DAF administrator to request a grant be made to The Jed Foundation (federal tax ID number 13-4131139) under your name and mail to:

The Jed Foundation
Attn: Development Department
PO Box 412945
Boston, MA 02241

Or try our DAF giving tool! JED has partnered with FreeWill to make it easy to provide a grant from your donor-advised fund.
