JED Receives 2023 Stevie Award for Nonprofit Organization of the Year

By Lauren Patetta
The Jed Foundation (JED) is thrilled to have won a Stevie Award for Nonprofit Organization of the Year. The award, which was granted as part of 2023’s American Business Awards, recognizes the achievements and impact of organizations across the United States.
More than 230 executives from the country’s top businesses joined the panel of judges for this year’s awards. The judges averaged scores on metrics such as effectiveness, creativity, and integrity to place the top three nominees in Bronze, Silver, and Gold categories. JED scored highest in the Nonprofit or Government Organization category, and was awarded a Gold Stevie Award trophy at a ceremony and banquet for winners in June.
“[JED] has achieved remarkable success in building partnerships, promoting awareness, providing resources, and advocating for change at multiple levels,” one judge commented. “Their diverse programs and initiatives have contributed significantly to building resilience, social connectedness, and help-seeking behaviors among young adults.”
Thank you to the Stevie Awards for this honor. A full list of Stevie Award winners for the year can be found here.

Nasdaq Spotlights The Jed Foundation’s Commitment to Student Mental Health for Back-to-School Season

On Aug. 31, The Jed Foundation (JED) senior leaders, staff, members of the Board of Directors and Leadership Council, students, and school leaders were invited to ring the opening bell at the Nasdaq MarketSite in the heart of Times Square in New York City.
The special event kicked off with Nasdaq Listings Host Kristina Ayanian introducing JED, highlighting its mission to protect emotional health and prevent suicide for teens and young adults nationwide. Ayanian then called up to the podium the day’s ceremonial bell ringers: John MacPhee, JED’s CEO; Rebecca Benghiat, JED’s President and Chief Operating Officer; Donna Satow, JED’s Co-Founder; and Jose Caballero, JED’s 2023 Student Voice of Mental Health Award Honoree.
Before the countdown began to ring in the start of trading, MacPhee offered brief remarks on JED’s origin and more than two decades of impactful work equipping individuals, mobilizing communities, and strengthening schools so young people have the mental health support they need to thrive.
He also called attention to the organization’s award-winning Seize the Awkward campaign, a joint effort from JED, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the Ad Council that encourages young people to have open conversations about mental health. The campaign’s latest public-service announcement was displayed on Nasdaq’s seven-story marquee and tower for the duration of the opening bell ceremony, bringing much-needed attention to a major public-health issue.
“Suicide is the second leading cause of death among emerging adults, with youth of color, LGBTQIA+ youth, and those from low-income circumstances experiencing even more stressors,” MacPhee said. “While I want to emphasize the seriousness of what we are seeing, I want to be clear: Suicide is preventable.”
MacPhee concluded his speech by encouraging individuals to leverage JED’s resources to make a difference in their own communities. “We can all play a role in supporting youth mental health by being supportive adults who help create communities of care,” he said. MacPhee, Benghiat, Satow, and Caballero were then joined on the stage by the rest of JED’s guests to push the button and ring the Nasdaq opening bell.
JED was selected to mark the start of back-to-school season and announce the relaunch of its updated Set to Go resources for students transitioning to life after high school, as well as to let individuals know hope and help is available this Suicide Prevention Awareness Month with the return of the It’s OK to Say Suicide campaign.
The Nasdaq Stock Market, situated in New York City just a few blocks from JED’s headquarters, is the busiest stock-trading venue in the country in terms of volume, and it ranks second for shares traded. Millions of national and international business, finance, and policy professionals rely on Nasdaq for the most up-to-date financial news and analysis.

The Jed Foundation (JED) and State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) Launch Student Mental Health and Wellness Learning Community
New partnership aims to advance educational success and enable students to thrive by reimagining state- and system-wide policies protecting youth mental health.
New York, August 31, 2023 — The Jed Foundation (JED), the nation’s leading nonprofit that protects emotional health and prevents suicide for teens and young adults, and the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) have launched a new learning community among state higher-education leaders committed to implementing whole student support for mental health.
Over the next year, JED and SHEEO will debut the inaugural Student Mental Health and Wellness Learning Community focused on the development and implementation of state- and system-wide policy recommendations that bolster institutions’ ability to effectively promote and support student mental health and wellness. Five states will be selected for $25,000 planning grants to facilitate their participation and identify strategies that effectively support students of color and students from low-income circumstances who face systemic inequities and experience pronounced disparities in mental health-care access.
In a 2021 study, 83% of college students reported that their emotional or mental health challenges hurt their academic performance. This is particularly true for students who face barriers to accessing mental health care, including low-income students and students of color, impacting their enrollment, achievement in, and completion of school.
“Higher education is intended to be a social mobilizer that not only offers young people an opportunity to learn, but also grow and create fulfilling lives,” said Dr. Zainab Okolo, Senior Vice President of Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations at JED. “By informing and engaging our partners at SHEEO, together we can develop and deploy real systems change to remove access barriers to equitable mental health supports and create cultures of care on campuses across the country.”
Any state is eligible to apply. Requests for proposal will be accepted from Aug. 31 to Sept. 22, 2023. States that are selected will participate in learning community events, including intensive technical assistance from JED and SHEEO that will take place between October 2023 and December 2024. Learn more about the partnership here.
The State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) serves the executives of statewide governing, policy, and coordinating boards of postsecondary education and their staffs. Founded in 1954, SHEEO promotes an environment that values higher education and its role in ensuring the equitable education of all Americans, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic factors. Together with its members, SHEEO aims to achieve this vision by equipping state higher-education executive officers and their staffs with the tools to effectively advance the value of higher education, promoting public policies and academic practices that enable all Americans to achieve success in the 21st century, and serving as an advocate for state higher-education leadership.
