Understanding Apathy

Apathy can show up when life feels repetitive, draining, or when we’re overwhelmed or burned out — and sometimes, it’s a sign of something deeper going on with your mental health. Understanding Apathy
If you or someone you know is struggling with feeling uninterested in your relationships, unmotivated at work or school, or feeling empty for no apparent reason, it may be apathy. Apathy is a lack of enthusiasm, interest, motivation, or emotional connection. Apathy may make you feel like you are empty or numb, can lead to poor self-worth, and at its most extreme may lead to suicidal thoughts. If you or someone you know is feeling apathy, it’s important to understand what is causing those feelings.
Dealing with Apathy
Sometimes it can be hard to identify what is causing us to feel apathy or numbness. Apathy may be caused by a particular situation, such as a repetitive routine or a job that’s not challenging. Apathy that is persistent and not tied to a specific event may be the sign of a deeper mental health issue. When we understand what causes apathy, we can then learn strategies to deal with it.
