Understanding Hopelessness

Understanding Hopelessness

Hopelessness is a feeling of powerlessness or helplessness, or a lack of optimism about the future. Sometimes hopelessness is caused by experiencing a significant loss, disruption to everyday life, or a period of instability. In other instances, hopelessness is the sign of a larger mental health issue, such as depression.

Coping with Hopelessness

It’s important to find ways to deal with and overcome hopelessness because left unaddressed, hopelessness can make some mental health issues worse. In turn, underlying mental health issues can cause deeper feelings of hopelessness. In extreme cases, hopelessness may lead to suicidal thoughts or behaviors. While we can’t always control what is leading to feelings of hopelessness, we can learn to shift our mindset and find healthy ways to cope.
